J'ACCUSE.....LES AMERICAINS

Riverbend's previous blog-post was on 26 Apr 2007; then, for the next 131 days, her silence was deafening. Her last sentence was: "It's difficult to decide which is more frightening - car bombs and militias, or having to leave everything you know and love, to some unspecified place for a future where nothing is certain." 131 days in the abatoir that is Baghdad & Iraq; days during which more than 6,783 Iraqis were killed. Did she know any of them? Was any of her family or others that she loved killed? Was.... SHE....killed? From the safety of my bubble-in-the-mountains, I became, daily, more concerned and anxious. Today, as a newly-arrived refugee in Syria, Riverbend posted a new entry, her last sentence being: "How is it that all of this lies a short car-ride away?" For her, I say "May the Blessings of Allah the Merciful be with you"; for myself..."mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa".

To paraphrase Gertrude Stein: "Americains, nous sommes une generation perdu".
